Mary, the Virgin Mother, Queen of Heaven, Mother of Christ, as well as many other titles, has been the object of veneration since the early days of the Christian Church. The personification of purity and grace, Mary was viewed as the mediatrix, the compassionate and accessible one, who could intercede on behalf of the worshipper. Art, music, literature and architecture testify to her place within the culture and history of the cult associated with her. It was particularly during the Renaissance that composers expressed their admiration in music that resulted in a large repertoire for liturgical and devotional purposes.

Modern editions of the Marian antiphons transcribed and edited by Harry Elzinga are forthcoming.
