[C]-C1; Ct-C4; T-C4. Perhaps fortuitous, chant is limited to initial pitches (C) of verse 7, “O clemens.” Throughout the motet Salve regina is scored for three continuous voices comprised of a texted C and two supportive (instrumental?) voices (Ct and T) frequently cast in long note values for verses 1-6 (mm, 1-105); verses 7, “O clemens,” and 8, “O pia,” have C and T texted whereas all voices are texted for verse 9, “O dulcis Maria.” On the other hand, each of the three verses of the trope Virgo mater[1] that, respectively, precede verses 7-9 consist of texted duos. Contrasting sections in triple and duple mensuration alternate throughout the setting. The word “mater” is omitted from verse 1 and “serena” from verse 9. Final d; b♭ signature (T) of first section.
