[C]-C1; A-C4; T-C4; [B]-F4. Chant (App. 4) significantly influences the structure and texture of the antiphon through the use of paraphrase and cantus firmus techniques and emphasis of specific words. The “salve/vita” motto permeates the texture (mm. 1-5 of 1.p.) together with paraphrased chant in C and a rhythmically assimilated cantus firmus in T. Subsequent partes are defined through paraphrase (4.p.), cantus firmus (2.p.), migrating cantus firmus (3.p. T/B) or combination of techniques: “Et Jesum” motive (A & B) in paired imitation (5.p., mm., 85-9), or cantus firmus in continuous breves (6.p., C, mm. 111-9 & T, mm. 121-7) followed by paraphrased plainsong (C) for verse 9. Pars 1 consists of identical music for verses 1 & 2;[1] partes 2-5 are each devoted to single verses and pars 6 includes the three acclamations (verses 7-9). Not only does 1.p. include verses 1 & 2, but the respective texts are also intertwined; C combines initial words of both verses (“Vita dulcedo mater misericordie”) whereas the three lower voices present verse 1. Since the initial “V” precedes the T, the beginning of verse 2 may also have been intended for that voice. Final d; no signature; editorial accidentals required.
