Polyphonic ensemble SATB

S-C1; A-C3; T-C4; B-F4. “Salve” intonation (S). Textual phrases are differentiated through texture, contrasting mensuration and structural devices. Chant (App. 4) serves as a cantus firmus in all partes but to emphasize specific words plainsong permeates the texture (e.g., “Eya ergo,” 5.p.; “benedictum” and “nobis” of 6.p.). Chant associated with “regina” is presented in B and A (semibreves) with imitation at distance of one breve and in T and S in breves and semibreves (mm. 4-17) at distance of three breves; for the remainder of pars 1 chant continues as a cantus firmus in T. Instead of the usual initial pitches (d, c, b♭ a g) for “regina” and “dulcedo” of the respective verses 1 and 2, an e♭ is inserted (d, e♭, d, c, b♭, a, g).[1] Contrasting triple mensuration defines pars 2 as well as segments of other partes: “gementes et flentes” and “valle” of 4.p.; “illos tuos” and “oculos” of 5.p.; and “virgo Maria” of 9.p.
The word “mater” in verse 1 is omitted. Final g, d (6.p. and 7.p.), b♭ signature; frequent inclusion of e♭ though additional editorial e-flats are required.

1. SR 368 and SR371 share presence of “salve” intonation, pitch inflection (e♭) inserted in plainsong associated with “regina” and “dulcedo,” deletion of first pitch of chant (“ad te”) for partes 3 and 4, segments in contrasting triple mensuration, transposition to g, cantus firmus treatment, omission of mater” in 1.p. but inclusion of “virgo” in 9.p. to suggest that both settings could be by the same composer.

Salve, regina, mater misericordiae;

O clemens,

O pia,

O dulcis virgo Maria.
