S-G2; A-C3; T-C4; B-F3. Chant (App. 4) introduces partes in longae and breves at times paraphrased (e.g., 1.p., S; 2.p., S; 3.p., S; 4.p., T; 5.p., S; 6.p., B; and 9.p., S) but also associated with specific words (e.g., “in hac,” 4.p., S; “illos,” 5.p., S and T; and “nobis,” 6.p., B). Three initial pitches of “O clemens,” (7.p.) provide the basis for a symmetrical cantus firmus (d’-M, c’-L, d’-dotted L, B rest, d’-B, c’-L, d’-L, d’-L) in T surrounded by contrapuntal texture. In three sections, the outer portions, each of 12 breves and the central segment of 7 breves, pars 9 symbolically represents Mary,[1] the focus of verse 9, “O dulcis virgo Maria.” To emphasize the symmetrical tripartite structure, the outer sections with respective texts “O dulcis” and “Maria” are homophonic whereas the middle section (“virgo”) for two voices (A and B) reflects a contrapuntal texture. Partes 2 and 8 are in triple mensuration as is the conclusion (“ad nos converte”) of pars 5. The word “mater” is omitted in pars 1. Limited concern for text underlay. Final g; b♭ signature.

1. The number seven represents the seven joys and seven sorrows of Mary, the number twelve associates Mary with Revelation 12.1 in reference to the woman with a crown of twelve stars on her head.
