S [I]-C1 [G2, 8.p.]; S II-C1; A-C3; T-C4; B-F4. Chant (App.4) serves as segmented cantus firmus primarily in breves and semibreves (partes 2, 4 and 5) and continuous c.f. of dotted breves in pars 7; in the latter example, the other voices have dotted semibreves (compound duple) in a homophonic texture. Systematic imitation of chant involves “salve” motto in pars 1 and “nobis” motive in pars 6; comprised of longae and breves, overlapping “salve” statements (S II, B, T, A) constitute measures 1-13, whereas “nobis” motive consisting of four semibreves overlaps throughout measures 186-93 (B, A, T, S II, S I). The first three pitches of “O pia” plainsong initiate a canon at the lower eleventh and distance of two breves between S II and B to define the structural core of pars 8 (note symmetry of cantus firmus); with each pitch and rest conceived as a longa (L), S II reads: a’ g’ a’ L b’ c’ b’ L a’ g’ a’. Non-cantus firmus voices include a variety of rhythmic gestures. Contrasting triple mensuration associated with “ad nos converte” concludes pars 5 (mm. 157-63). The words “mater” in verse 1 and “virgo” verse 9 are omitted. Final d, a (7.p. and 8.p.).
