[D]-C1; [A]-C2; [C3]-C3; [B]-F4. “Salve/vita” motto (App. 4) in semibreves introduces v. 1 (T, A, D, B, mm. 1-5) and v. 2 (D, mm. 11-5); an embellished chant motive associated with “ad te,” v. 3, appears in B, A, T, D (mm. 19-21), and D of “O clemens” carries chant in breves. Salve regina verses are clearly distinguished through contrast of texture, rhythmic gestures, cadential treatment, silence and text repetition. “Salve…miserecordiae” (mm. 1-10) serves as a prelude; a closed statement of v. 2 (mm. 11-20) continues character of prelude. Emphasis of rhythmic gestures comprised of minums and semiminums coupled with a disjunct melodic motive to introduce v. 4 (mm. 27-9), creates a character for verses 3, 4 & 5 that contrasts with preceding and succeeding musical materials. Within this episodic structure, v. 5, “eia…converte,” the textual centerpiece, is set apart by a preceding minum rest in all voices; in similar fashion, v. 6, “Et Jesum,” concludes with a corona over the final chord followed by silence (semibreve). The first two acclamations (verses 7 & 8) are cast in breves and semibreves (mm. 75-81). The final verse resumes the character of v. 6 creating a symmetrical structure for pars 2. Except for short melismas, a syllabic text setting prevails. Final g, b♭ signature.

Salve, regina, mater misericordiae;

O clemens,

O pia,

O dulcis virgo Maria.
