[D]-G2; Ct-C2; T-C4; B-F3. High clefs.[1] Entire range, B♭-g’’. Alternatim setting. Chant (App. 4), assigned to Ct as a cantus firmus, appears intact in breves and semibreves (e.g., “Vita dulcedo,“ 1.p. and “Ad te,” 2.p.) but paraphrased (“et spes nostra,” 1.p. and “suspiramus,” 2.p.). Occasionally, chant permeates the texture (e.g., ”Et Jesum,” mm. 54-9 and “nobis,” mm. 72-9 ). The cantus of Pierre de La Rue’s Mijn hert altijt heft verlanghen[2] assigned to D, serves as a second structural voice: the first 19 mm. to pars 1, the remaining 33 mm., pars 2, the entire melody, pars 3 and the first 15 mm., pars 4. The author of the text reveals his devotion to his fair love, devotion and reverence that also relate to the Virgin Mary. A layered texture defines pars 2 and 4 wherein two rhythmically active voices, T and B, interact imitatively, in parallel movement or contrapuntally, support two upper voices constructed of borrowed material. Partes 1 and 4 of equal length (19 mm.) suggest a symmetrical design. Text underlay is of limited concern particularly in the D. Final d (1.p., 2.p., 3.p.), a (4.p.).

1. Whereas C4 (T) does not qualify as a high clef, the clefs associated with D, Ct and B as well as the entire range suggest the presence of high clefs; high clefs define Pierre de La Rue’s Mijn hert.
