Polyphonic ensemble SATBX

C-G2; Q-C2; A-C2; T-C3; B-C4. High clefs. Entire range, c-g’’. Textual phrases and verses are differentiated through motivic material, texture, mensuration, harmonic language and repetition. Verses 1 and 2 include a paraphrased “salve” motive (App. 4) and a descending stepwise motive associated with “miserecordiae” within an imitative, polyphonic transparent texture. Verse 3, “Ad te…Evae” (mm. 22-6) and the first half of verse 4, “ad te…flentes” (mm. 27-31), are scored for three contrasting groups of homorhythmic, independent voices: “Ad te clamamus…Evae” (C, Q, T); “Ad te suspiramus (Q, A, B); and “gementes et flentes” (C, A, B). An extended harmonic palate expresses the conclusion of verses 4, “in hac lacrimarum valle” (g, E♭ A♭, E♭, g, D, mm. 32-6). Contrasting triple mensuration coupled with homorhythmic style emphasizes the beginning of the textual centerpiece, ”Eia ergo advocata” (mm. 37-44). Beginning with verse 6 (“Et Jesum”) a full-voice texture consisting primarily of independent voices characterizes the conclusion of the antiphon; a homophonic, homorhythmic texture defines “post hoc exilium ostende” (mm. 67-8). Music associated with verse 9 is stated twice (mm. 74-80=80-6). Final g; b♭ signature.

Salve, regina, mater misericordiae;

O clemens,

O pia,

O dulcis virgo Maria.
