[C]-G2; [A]-C2; [T]-C3; [B]-F3. High clefs. Entire range, c-g’’. Alternatim setting. Imitative texture incorporating chant (App. 4) introduces “vita” motive of pars 1 and “O pia” (4.p.); paraphrased chant initiates partes 2 and 3 as well as specific words (e.g., “fructum” and “nobis”) of pars 3. Three repeated pitches (minums) introduce the text, “et spes nostra” (1.p.) within an imitative texture. In many Salve regina settings homophony is relegated to “Et Jesum”; however, the contrapuntal texture characteristic of this antiphon setting is also apparent in the initial text of pars 3. Text setting suggests a combination of melismatic (e.g., “dulcedo”, 1.p.; “nobis”, 3.p. created from chant; and “O pia,” 4.p.) and syllabic styles (e.g., “gementes…valle,” 2.p. and “fructum…ostende,” 3.p.). Final, g, b♭ signature, d (4.p.); e-flats included in text but editorial e-flats are required.

Description

Items SR305-SR313, unattributed in LeidGA 1442, are possibly by Johannes Flamingus who is credited with 12 compositions in the manuscript and who was also one of the scribes. Similar style characteristics of the 12 antiphons suggest the work of one composer.
