C-C2; A-C3; T-C4; B-F4. The structure of this alterntim setting of even-numbered verses is singular. “Ad te suspiramus,” the initial text of 3.p. appears to have been omitted. On the other hand, the inclusion of “misericordes oculos,” a textual segment of verse 5, the centerpiece of the antiphon is unusual,[1] and verses 7-9 are combined in the final polyphonic verset. Chant[2] introduces “vita” (“salve”) motto as breves within an imitative texture (B, T, A, C, mm. 1-10) and continues in C as a cantus firmus; chant associated with specific words also permeates the texture (e.g., “et flentes,” C, T, B, A, mm. 37-42; “lacrimarum,” C, A, T, B, mm. 46-50, and “fructum,” B, A, T, C, mm. 78-83). Plainsong serves as cantus firmus in longae, breves and semibreves (T) associated with “O clemens, O pia.” Textual phrases are articulated through cadences, silence or contrasts of texture (imitation, homophony or voice independence). The antiphon concludes with a new motive (“virgo”) treated imitatively in the final measures (118-22) reminiscent of the conclusion of pars 1 (mm. 29-33). Final d; editorial b-flats are necessary.
