Polyphonic ensemble SATB

D-C1; A-C3; T-C4; B-F4. “Salve” motto appears in long note values (A) for the duration of nine measures; however, the motto is absent for “vita” nor is the “Et Jesum” motive of verse 5 included. Brief chant (App. 4) references underscore specific phrases or words (e.g., “in hac lacrimarum,” D, mm. 140-6; “illos tuos,” B, mm. 196-201; “nobis,” T, D, B, mm. 277-88: and initial pitches of verse 9 “O dulcis…”). Verses 1 and 2, and 7 and 8 are, respectively, combined in pars 1 and 6. Imitation is limited to initial measures of pars 2 and 3. Extensive sections of intensified rhythmic activity in all voices (i.e., “drive to the cadence”) conclude four partes: 2.p. (mm. 105-12); 3.p. (mm. 153-62); 5.p. (mm. 305-20); and 7.p. (mm. 405-12). An insertion of parallel thirds in contrary motion (2.p., D/A and T/B, mm. 107-10) and a descending stepwise sequence of complementary motives (5.p., D/T, mm. 305-19) heighten the rhythmic drive to the cadence. Contrasting triple mensuration distinguishes “converte,” the final word of verse 4 (mm. 233-46). A melismatic text setting defines this large-scale antiphon (414 mm.). Final g, a (6.p.), b♭ signature.

Salve, regina, mater misericordiae;

O clemens,

O pia,

O dulcis virgo Maria.
