C-G2; A-C2; T-C3; B-C4. High clefs. Entire range. c-g’’. Chant (App. 4) performs a significant role introducing textual phrases and serving as cantus firmus. Initial pitches accompanying a specific phrase may be set apart in semibreves or breves (“Et Jesum”) and invariably permeate the imitative texture. A cantus firmus distinguished by long note values defines verse 7, “O clemens” (A) and verse 8, “O pia” (C). Verdelot subsitutes the “salve” motto for the chant that accompanies the final word (“salve”) of verse 2. The word “mater” is omitted from verse 1. Text setting includes syllabic and melismatic styles with limited concern for declamation. Final g, b♭ signature.
