Textual phrases are defined through silence preceding specific verses, cadential patterns and contrast of melodic material and voice groupings within a predominantly homorhythmic and pseudo contrapuntal style. Four voices distinguish verse 1 (C, A, T, Q), the beginning of verse 3 (C, A, T, B) and verse 5 (C, A, T, B, mm. 25-29; C, A, T, Q, mm. 30-6). A minum rest in all voices precedes verses 3, 4, and 5; a semibreve rest precedes verse 6. Characteristic of Vecchi’s setting are harmonic progressions with root movement in fourths and fifths (e.g., a, E, a, E, A, D, G, C, F) that accompanies “suspiramus gementes” (mm. 17-20). Declamatory text setting primarily in syllabic style prevails. Final d.
