C I-G2; C II-C1; A I-C3; A II-C3; T I-C4; T II-C4; B I-F4; B II-F4. Entire range, F-f’’. Alternatim setting. “Vita” (“salve”) motto is absent in 1.p., but prominently appears in A I of 2.p. with text “ad te” (mm. 27-30) surrounded by imitative entries of chant (App. 4) associated with “ad te.” “Et Jesum” motive pervades imitative texture of 3.p. (mm. 64-74). Vaet’s Salve regina borrows from his motet Vita, dulcedo et spes nostra salve (1564|1, No. 9), but with a text addressed to Jesus:
1.p. Verses 2 and 4 of Salve regina.
2.p. [Et vitam sempiternam] fructum [crucis] tuae, nobis post hoc
3.p. O pie [Jesu]
The inscription “ad imitationem iay mys mon coeur” appears at the beginning of the model. The first phrase of the T of the anonymous five-voice chanson[1] is allocated to T I of both settings. A motet conceived for 3-8 interrelated voices also includes antiphonal treatment most notably with texts “fructum ventris tui” (mm. 88-92), “O pia” (mm. 124-9) and “post hoc exilium” (mm. 109-14); in preparation for the final cadence of 3.p. an inner octave pedal on g’/g (C II and T I) is enveloped by alternating voice groups (A I, T II, B II and C I, A II,
B I). Almost two-thirds of 1.p., 3.p. and 4.p. are full-voiced. Declamatory text setting prevails. Final g, b♭ signature.

1. No. 8 in VienNB Mus. 18746. Transcription in DTÖ 116, Appendix, No. 2.

J’ay mis mon coeur en ung lieu seulement, / I set my heart in but one solitary place,
Si très avant que ne s’en peult sortir. / Surely from which it cannot leave.
Tant plus y pense et plus ay de soucy / The more I think of it, the more I anguish.
Las! Je ne puis vivre a mon Plaisir. / Alas! I can no loonger live freely.

Salve, regina, mater misericordiae;

O clemens,

O pia,

O dulcis virgo Maria.
