Two contrasting choirs. Chr. I, C-C1; A-C3; T-C4; B-F4. Range, E-d’’. Chr. II, C-C3; A-C4; T-T4; B-F4. Range, E-a’. “Salve” motto (App. 4), as upper voice within paired imitation (Chr. I, C/A & T/B, mm. 1-5), introduces the antiphon. Textual phrases are delineated through texture, rhythmic gestures, harmonic language and antiphonal treatment. A vertical structure follows the initial imitative texture. Antiphony articulates verses 3 and 5 (Chrs. II & I) with identical statements of “Ad te clamamus” (mm. 13-6) and varied statements of “Eia ergo” (mm. 26-7). Other antiphonal responses continue the narrative of the antiphon. Full-voice (8 vv) texture emphasizes the conclusion of verse three (“exules vilii Evae,” mm. 15-8), the beginning of verse 5 (“Eia…nostra,” mm. 26-8), “Et Jesum” (mm. 31-3) and the final verse, “O dulcis virgo Maria” (mm. 44-9). Overlapping antiphonal statements normally extend for the duration of a minum. To depict “suspiramus,” semiminum rests surround the first syllable (mm. 19-20). Descending voices (Chr. I, C, A, T) and harmonic progressions express “gementes et flentes in hac lachrimarum valle”: e, b, F♯, b, C, e, E, A, B♭, g, A, d, a, E; the phrase concludes with the chord E, e, g♯, b. Syllabic text setting prevails. Final d, accidentals included in S 6451.
