Two equal choirs. C-C1; A-C3; T-C4; B-F4. Range, Chr. I, D-e’’, Chr. II, F-e’’. “Salve” intonation (T). Except for initial statements of “regina” (Chr I, T and C; Chr. II, C) with accompanying plainsong, remainder of the motet is free of chant. Textual phrases are defined through contrasting textures, rhythmic character and antiphonal treatment. Imitative passages introduce verses 1, (“regina,” mm. 1-5) and 3, “ad te clamamus,” mm. 16-20) involving both choirs: verse 1, Chr. I, C and T, Chr. II, C; verse 3, paired imitation between C/A of both choirs. Homophony, frequently coupled with homorhythmic style dominates the setting; a short motive associated with “vita dulcedo” consists of minims and semiminums creating a rhythmic character that contrasts with surrounding material. Tutti sections emphasize specific words or textual phrases: “mater” (mm. 5-8); “et spes, salve” (mm. 14-6); “gementes et flentes” (mm. 25-9); “Eia ergo (mm. 35-6); “Et Jesum” (mm. 55-7); and the final statement of “O dulcis virgo Maria” (mm. 74-9). In several instances the choirs are harmonically dependent in tutti sections (e.g., mm. 15-6 and mm. 25-9). Identical music suffices for verses 7 “O clemens” and 8 “O pia.” Declamatory text setting prevails. Final d.
