Partitions

[1] Vita dulcedo

Polyphonic ensemble SSAATB

S I-G2; S II-G2; A I-C2; A II-C2; T-C3; B-C4. High clefs. Entire range, c-g’’. Alternatim setting. Contrary to the usual practice by Spanish composers of dividing verse 6, “Et Jesum…” in two parts, the first in polyphony, the second, “nobis…ostende,” in chant, Robledo includes the entire verse but also the three acclamations (verses 7-9) in one polyphonic segment (3.p.) disregarding alternatim treatment. Chant[1] serves as a cantus firmus in breves and semibreves in S I of 1.p. though “vita” motto statements in S II (mm. 1-4) and T (mm. 5-8) precede the cantus firmus entrance (m. 8). Hints of chant in second (“ad te,” mm. 34-7 and “in hac,” mm. 53-5) and third partes (“benedictum,” mm. 81-3; “fructum,” mm. 85-8; and “nobis,” mm. 90-7) appear in various voices. New motives treated imitatively create a dense texture in 1.p. (mm. 15-34) and 3.p. (mm. 96-133); within this final section mm. 126-30 constitute a variant of mm. 116-20). Declamatory text setting prevails. Final g, b♭ signature.

1. Due to the limited presence of chant the source of plainsong cannot be determined.

Salve, regina, mater misericordiae;

O clemens,

O pia,

O dulcis virgo Maria.
