Partitions

Polyphonic ensemble SAATBX

D-G2; Sx-G2; A-C2; A-C3; T-C3; B-F3. High clefs. Entire range, G-g’’. Two equal treble (D, Sx) voices. No evidence of chant. Textual phrases or sections of phrases are differentiated through contrasting voice groups and antiphonal effects within a homophonic/homorhythmic texture (e.g., “O clemens, O pia,” in triple mensuration, mm. 51-9) as well as segments comprised of independent voices (e.g. “illos…ostende,” mm. 33-50). Antiphonal effects introduce the motet. “Salve regina,” first stated by upper 3 voices (D, Sx, A, mm. 1-2), is followed by A, T, B a fifth lower (mm. 3-4) and culminates with full-voice texture (mm. 5-9). A duo (D, Sx) introduces the 5th textual phrase, “Eya…nostra” (mm. 28-33); a trio (D, Sx, A) concludes the verse, “illos…converte” (mm. 33-9). More than a third of the antiphon is full-voiced: “salve…miserecordiae,” mm. 5-9; “et Jesum…ostende” mm. 40-50; and “O clemens…Maria,” mm. 57-67. Declamatory text setting in syllabic style prevails. Final g; b♭ signature, e-flats in R 1084, or editorially required.

Salve, regina, mater misericordiae;

O clemens,

O pia,

O dulcis virgo Maria.
