[S I]-C1, [S II]-C1, [A]-C3; [T I]-C4; [T II]-C4; [B]-F4. Chant is limited to paraphrase of initial “salve” (S I and A) and quotation of “nobis” motive (T I, S I, B, mm. 55-66) of verse 6. Textual verses and phrases are delineated through contrast of character that involves melodic and rhythmic materials, voice groupings, texture, mensuration and presence of expressive harmonic language. Therefore, the full-voice homorhythmic section in triple mensuration[1] that underscores “miserecordes oculos ad nos converte” is striking. Similar melodic and rhythmic gestures introduce verses 1, 4 (mm. 24-6) and 5 (mm. 38-40) to provide a degree of unity. Declamatory text primarily in syllabic style defines setting. Final a; several g-sharps at cadential points must be added

1. Notation in coloration designates triple mensuration; however, the black notes may also graphically (“eye music”) convey the serious content of the accompanying text.

Salve, regina, mater misericordiae;

O clemens,

O pia,

O dulcis virgo Maria.
