[1] Salve regina

Polyphonic ensemble SATB

C-C4; A-C4; T-F3; B-F4. Voce pari. Entire range, F-e♭’. Chant is limited to “salve/vita” motto and the motive associated with “nobis” (mm. 64-7) all of which permeate the imitative texture. Textual phrases are delineated through contrast of texture, cadential treatment and expressive harmonic content. Initial measures of verses 1 and 2 (1-5=11-4) share similar materials within an imitative texture. On the other hand, a homorhythmic texture defines verses 3 and 4, each surrounded by silence. In the same manner verses 5, 6 and the three acclamations (verses 7-9) are, respectfully, surrounded by silence. Harmonic progressions (g, D, E♭, c, B♭, g) express “et Jesum” in verse 6. Declamatory style defines text setting. Final g, b♭ signature; inclusion of e-flats in source, but editorial e-flats are necessary.

Salve, regina, mater misericordiae;

O clemens,

O pia,

O dulcis virgo Maria.
