[1] Salve regina

Polyphonic ensemble SATB

C-C2; A-C3; T-C3; B-C4. Presence of chant is limited to “illos tuos” (T, mm. 40-3) of verse 5, “Et Jesum” (B, mm. 50-3) and initial four pitches associated with “fructum” of verse 6 (T, mm. 55-7). Four voices perform within range of c-d’’ wherein A and T share the same range (f-g’), hence considerable voice crossing. Brief imitative passages introduce most textual phrases; a semibreve rest in all voices (m. 20) precedes a homorhythmic setting of verse 4, “ad te suspiramus gementes” (mm. 20-3). A repeated four-note descending figure (g, f, e♭, d) with text “eia ergo” supports the initial phrase (B, mm. 32-6) of 2.p.; within the same verse a five-note figure associated with “miserecordes” is similarly treated (B, mm. 41-3). The word “mater” in verse 1 is omitted. Declamatory text setting primarily in syllabic style prevails. Final g; b♭ signature.

Salve, regina, mater misericordiae;

Vita, dulcedo et spes nostra, salve.

Ad te clamamus exsules filii Hevae.

Ad te suspiramus gementes et flentes in hac lacrimarum valle.

Eia ergo, advocata nostra, illos tuos misericordes oculos ad nos converte.

Et Jesum, benedictum fructum ventris tui, nobis post hoc exsilium ostende.

O clemens,

O pia,

O dulcis virgo Maria.
