[D]-C1; [A]-C4; [T I]-C4; [T II]-C4; [B]-F4. Alternatim setting. Chant (App. 4) appears in canon in first and third partes and as cantus firmus in second and fourth partes creating a symmetrical structure. The “vita” motto in C (mm. 1-3) introduces canon at the upper fourth at distance of a semibreve between tenor voices in 1.p. For pars 3 chant serves as a cantus firmus in T until m. 70 (“exilium ostende”) at which point canon at the upper fifth between tenor voices concludes the movement. Paired imitation with chant in the upper voice initiates two points of imitation prior to entrance of cantus firmus in B (m. 21, “gementes”) in semibreves. A cantus firmus in maximas, longae, and breves, assigned to T II, is rhythmically altered and slightly ornamented in C (mm. 15-27. Triple mensuration defines 1.p.; the remaining partes are in duple mensuration. Melismatic style dominates text setting. Final d for first three partes; a (4.p.).
