Two equal choirs. C I-G2; A I-C2; T I-C3; B-F3; C II-G2; A II-C2; T II-C3; B II-F3; Bc-F3. A Bc (basso seguente) as well as the highest C voice was added in the second edition (P 1976). High clefs. Range of each choir, G-a’’. Following “salve” intonation (C I), chant (App. 4) associated with “regina” continues in C I while the lower three voices of Chr. I (A I, T I, B I) simultaneously state the text “salve” including the “salve” motto in B I, a unique example in the Salve regina repertoire. Chant also appears with “vita dulcedo” (C II) and verses 7, “O clemens” (C I) and 8, “O pia” (C II). Textual phrases are distinguished through antiphonal treatment, motivic material, contrasting textures, mensuration and character. Antiphony involves alternation of overlapping verses (e.g., verses 1 and 2) phrases (e.g., “ad te clamamus”) or words (e.g., “ad te” at beginning of verses 3 and 4, “Et Jesum,” “benedictum” and “ostende” of verse 6). The textual phrases “illos tuos miserecordes oculos ad nos” (Chr. I, mm. 45-7) and “nobis post hoc exilium” (Chr. II, mm. 53-4) cast in semiminums within a homophonic texture markedly contrast with surrounding musical material. Tutti sections that constitute a quarter of the motet conclude most verses. Expressive harmonic progressions (B♭, E♭, B♭, F, c, D, G) accompany “lacrimarum valle.” Verse 9 in triple mensuration with six antiphonal statements of “Maria” concludes this poetic setting. The text “mater misericordiae” verse 1 is omitted. Final g, b♭ signature.

Salve, regina, mater misericordiae;

Vita, dulcedo et spes nostra, salve.

Ad te clamamus exsules filii Hevae.

Ad te suspiramus gementes et flentes in hac lacrimarum valle.

Eia ergo, advocata nostra, illos tuos misericordes oculos ad nos converte.

Et Jesum, benedictum fructum ventris tui, nobis post hoc exsilium ostende.

O clemens,

O pia,

O dulcis virgo Maria.
