Two equal choirs. C-G2; A-C2; T-C3; B-C4. High clefs. Entire range, c-f’’. Chant (App. 4), cast in semibreves (C), is relegated to verses 1 and 2; to complement the identical chant for the two verses, verse 2 begins with melody associated with “dulcedo” (“regina” in verse 1) but with text “vita.” The remainder of the antiphon consists of new material. Paired imitation (T/B and C/A of Chr. I) introduces verse 1; thereafter, homophony prevails. Antiphonal treatment involves alternation of verses (e.g., verses 1 and 2, 7 and 8), textual phrases (e.g., a modified repeat of “ad te suspiramus” followed by alternation of “gementes,” “et flentes” and “in hac lacrymarum” of verse 4) or specific words (e.g., “nobis” of verse 6). To emphasize verse 6, a semibreve rest precedes a tutti statement of “et Jesum.” Verse 3, “ad te clamamus…” and the third statement of verse 9 are also scored for tutti. Expressive harmonic progressions emphasize verse 7, (O clemens” (g, B♭, A) and verse 8, “O pia” (g, E♭, D). The word “mater” is omitted from verse 1. Final g, b♭ signature.
