Partitions

[1] Salve regina

Polyphonic ensemble SAATB

S-C1; A I-C3; A II-C3; T-C4; B-F4. Ortiz emphasizes the symmetrical design of the antiphon text with a four-voice setting of verse 5, “Eia ergo,” surrounded on each side by four partes for five voices; in addition, 5.p. is preceded by a segment concluding on D, the dominant. For the first five partes, chant,[1] usually in semibreves, pervades the imitative texture as it introduces textual phrases. A homophonic texture defines the style of “Et Jesum” for which the chant is presented in T and B; verses 7-9 also exhibit a homophonic texture. Multiple statements of the “salve” motto appear in S, A II, T and B; the word “regina” replaces “salve” for the second motto in S and the fourth in B. A declamatory text setting prevails. Final g, b♭ signature; final D for verses 7 and 8 complements dominant plainsong cadences.

1. The plainsong partially corresponds with known Spanish and 16th-century antiphonale Salve regina melodies but most likely reflects a local tradition.

Salve, regina, mater misericordiae;

O clemens,

O pia,

O dulcis virgo Maria.
