Polyphonic ensemble STBX

S-C1; Ct-C2; T-C5; B-F4. Assigned to B as a cantus firmus, chant (App. 4), transposed to the lower fourth, appears in long-note values (1.p., mm. 9-12 and 5.p., mm. 192-203), but rhythmically resembles other voices for the remainder of the setting. The cantus firmus (at pitch) migrates to T for a three-voice passage (S, Ct, T) with text “Et Jesum benedictum” and 4.p., “O pia” (lower fourth). The “salve” motto (at pitch) introduces S as the upper voice of a duo (S/Ct) and T (mm. 10-12) embedded within the texture. Equality of voices, a continuous texture with overlapping phrases and asymmetrical rhythmic gestures characterize Ockeghem’s style. Triple mensuration defines first, third and fourth partes whereas the second and fifth partes contrast in duple mensuration. A melismatic text setting prevails. Final d (1.p., 5.p.); a (2.p., 4.p.), e (3.p.).
