C-C1; Q-C1; A-C3; T-C4; Sx-C4; B-F4. Entire range, F-a’’. “Salve” (“vita”) motive, the singular chant element in the antiphon, pervades the imitative texture (mm. 1-8 and 20-5). Textual phrases are differentiated through contrasting texture, thematic material, mensuration, antiphonal techniques and expressive devices. Homophony prevails in the antiphonal sections that alternate four upper voices with four lower voices (e.g., “et…salve,” mm. 28-33, or “exsules…Hevae,” mm. 43-8); antiphony initiates the 2.p. as lower voices (A, T, Sx, B) present “Eia ergo advocata nostra,” a five-measure phrase, stated a fourth higher (C, Q, A, T) in contrasting triple mensuration (mm. 69-78). To emphasize “Ad te suspiramus” Nucius places a semiminum rest in all voices after the first syllable of “suspiramus” coupled with expressive harmonic progressions (d, F, C, d, A, C, G, a, E, A). Comparable harmonic progressions express the concluding three acclamations. A descending stepwise motive that spans the interval of a sixth accompanies eleven statements of “in hac lacrimarum valle,” (mm. 58-68).[1] The words “mater” in verse 1 and “virgo” in verse 9 are omitted. Declamatory text setting prevails. Final d.

1. In the seventh chapter of Musices poeticae (Neisse, 1613), Nucius cites rhetorical terminology to explain specific compositional procedures and devices used to illustrate words or textual phrases and enhance their emotional content.

Salve, regina, mater misericordiae;

Vita, dulcedo et spes nostra, salve.

Ad te clamamus exsules filii Hevae.

Ad te suspiramus gementes et flentes in hac lacrimarum valle.

Eia ergo, advocata nostra, illos tuos misericordes oculos ad nos converte.

Et Jesum, benedictum fructum ventris tui, nobis post hoc exsilium ostende.

O clemens,

O pia,

O dulcis virgo Maria.
