S-C1; A-C4; T-C4; B-F4. Although chant (App. 4) appears most frequently in T, it migrates to other voices (e.g., B for “gementes et flentes,” or S for verse 7, “O clemens”), and pervades the texture with anticipatory entrances (e.g., “salve” and “vita”) set apart in semibreves or breves (e.g., “O clemens” and “O pia”). Misonne introduces verse 6, “Et Jesum,” with paired imitation (S/A and T/B) with the chant motive in the lower voices. To complement the use of identical chant for verses 1 and 2, the entire texture is restated (mm. 1-12=12-23).[1] The word “mater” is omitted in verse 1, but “semper” (“ virgo semper Maria”) is inserted in verse 9. A declamatory text setting prevails. Final d.

Salve, regina, mater misericordiae;

O clemens,

O pia,

O dulcis virgo Maria.
