Polyphonic ensemble

C-C3; A-C4; T I-C4; T II-F3; B-F4. Entire range, G-f’. T I only in 3.p. Alternatim setting. Chant quotations[1] introduce textual phrases (e.g., “Salve,” T & C in breves, mm. 1-6 and [et] “spes,” A & T, respectively, as semibreves and breves, mm. 16-21) and serve as cantus firmi (e.g.,
“O clemens,” A, in breves). An imitative, contrapuntal texture of 4 voices (5 voices for 3.p.) primarily characterizes partes 1, 3, 4, and 5. Pars 2 opens with a duo of 17 mm. (T & B) followed by a duo of 16 mm. (C & A) with the same text, “ad te suspiramus.” The C of the upper voice duo states the first 14 mm. of the T a 5th higher; the lower voices of the respective duos are independent. To emphasize the following textual phrase “gementes et flentes” (groaning and weeping) Medina accompanies the 6 syllables with concomitant harmonies supporting plainsong in C, each capped with a corona; a four-voice polyphonic texture (“in hac lacrimarum valle”) concludes the verset
Final d; editorial b-flats necessary.

1. Although most quotations conform to the Spanish version of Salve regina in the antiphonary published in Seville, 1565, the plainsong in C associated with “gementes et flentes” accords with the version in Alcalá de Henares, 1515. For transcriptions of Salve regina chant, see MRM 9, pp. 70-2. Most likely, a local version of Salve Regina was available to Medina.

Salve, regina, mater misericordiae;

Vita, dulcedo et spes nostra, salve.

Ad te clamamus exsules filii Hevae.

Ad te suspiramus gementes et flentes in hac lacrimarum valle.

Eia ergo, advocata nostra, illos tuos misericordes oculos ad nos converte.

Et Jesum, benedictum fructum ventris tui, nobis post hoc exsilium ostende.

O clemens,

O pia,

O dulcis virgo Maria.
