Polyphonic ensemble SATB

S-C1; A-C3; T-C3; B-F4. Chant (App. 4) at times paraphrased (verses 1, 2, 3, and 9), but usually cast as a cantus firmus in long-note values, assumes a principal role in one of the longest Salve regina settings (334 mm.). In partes 4 and 6 the motives, respectively attached to “Eia ergo” and “Et Jesum,” migrate through all voices. In verse 3 the cantus firmus is assigned to A, whereas in the remaining partes (5.p., 7.p., 9.p.) it appears in T. In addition, six complete or partial chants with their texts complement specific Salve regina verses (see below). Though unrelated to the BVM, the six foreign chants plus Salve regina could symbolically suggest the seven sorrows of the BVM. All chant melodies are transposed a fourth higher or a fifth lower. Chant associated with the word “nobis” introduces the hymn Gloria, laus et honor in 7.p.; the A carries only the initial words of the hymn before returning to the Salve regina text (“Benedictum…”). The word “mater” in verse 1 and “virgo” in verse 9 are omitted. Final g, b♭ signature; b♭ and e♭ signature in A for verse 8.

Description

Murray Steib doubts the attribution to J. Martini based upon a revised reading of the attribution in MunBS 3154; six other pieces are attributed to “Jo. Martini” in the manuscript, whereas Salve regina is attributed to “Jo. M.” or perhaps “Jo. A.” Steib suggests that “from a stylistic standpoint, it could have been composed by any one of a number of composers active between 1460-80.” (Martini et al., 2009, p. xv).

Salve, regina, mater misericordiae;

O clemens,

O pia,

O dulcis virgo Maria.
