D-G2; Ct-C2; T-C3; B-C4. High clefs. Entire range, A-g’’. Chant (App. 4) underscores specific words through pervading imitation, or presence of cantus firmus. A slightly ornamented “salve” motto permeates the texture (mm. 1-8); on the other hand, the “salve” motto defines “vita” (T, mm. 11-13), and appropriate chant accompanies “advocata nostra” (T, mm. 48-55), “et Jesum” (T, mm. 67-70), “nobis” (T/B, mm. 86-91), and “O dulcis” (B, mm. 119-25). Except for what may be coincidental chant references, the remainder of the antiphon consists of newly composed material. An imitative texture prevails in the overlapping duo (D/Ct and T/B) passages associated with verses 3 and 4 (mm. 19-40) and “O clemens” (mm. 104-12). A rising sequential pattern defines D/Ct (“O clemens,” mm. 104-8) and B (“O pia,” mm. 112-15). Text underlay is of limited concern. The words “mater” of verse 1 and “virgo” of verse 9 are omitted. Final a.

Salve, regina, mater misericordiae;

O clemens,

O pia,

O dulcis virgo Maria.
