Salve regina plainsong and Virgo mater trope melody[1] are freely used in various voices. “Salve” (“vita”) motto introduces verse 1 in long-note values (T, mm. 1-4) and as semibreves for verse 2 (T, mm. 17-20); a slightly paraphrased chant continues in T with text “dulcedo” but migrates to B for “salve,” the final word of verse 2. Except for the presence of chant with “Et Jesum” (B) and verse 8 (T), the remainder of the antiphon exhibits limited use of plainsong; the trope[2] verses “Virgo mater” (Ct, M and T) and “Virgo clemens” (Tr and M,) include the trope melody. Textual phrases are delineated through contrast of full-voice and reduced voice sections as well as an increased degree of floridity in the latter segments. Lambe assigns treble voices (Tr, M I, M II) to the first line of “Virgo clemens” and Tr I, Tr II, M to the second line. Whereas other Salve regina settings in the Eton Choirbook involve contrast of duple and triple mensuration particularly relative to trope verses, Lamb’s setting adheres to duple mensuration. Final d, b♭ signature in B throughout and T beginning with trope.
