Partitions

Polyphonic ensemble SSATB

C I-G2; C II-G2; A-C2; T-C3; B-F3. High clefs. Entire range, G-a’’. Two equal C voices: range, f’-a’’. Chant, cast as semibreves and breves, emphasizes specific words: “salve” motto, C I, mm. 2-4; 2 statements of “salve,” C II, mm. 4-9; and “eya ergo, T, mm. 38-41. Textual phrases are differentiated through contrasting texture, mensuration, antiphonal treatment and repetition. An imitative, contrapuntal texture particularly characterizes the opening 12 mm. (“salve regina”) and the concluding 25 mm. (“O clemens…Maria”), sections that include rhythmic gestures constructed of minums, semiminums and fusae. A homorhythmic style defines “illos…converte” in triple mensuration. With antiphonal treatment of “vita dulcedo” (mm. 16-20), the three lower voices (A, T, B) restate music of the three upper voices (C I, C II, A) a fourth lower. Repetition (mm. 72-5 equals 79-82) intensifies the rhythmic energy of the concluding section. Descending voices (C I, A, T) express “in hac lacrimarum valle” (mm. 34-6), and adjoining third-related harmonies (c, E♭, g) underscore “regina” (mm. 11-2). Final g, b♭ signature.

Salve, regina, mater misericordiae;

O clemens,

O pia,

O dulcis virgo Maria.
