Polyphonic ensemble AB

A-C1; B-C4. The structure of the antiphon comprises two canons both at the upper fourth and distance of a semibreve. A paraphrased chant[1] stated in the A on a’ is repeated by S on d’’; an ornamented version of melodic gesture associated with “nobis” simultaneously appears with chant in B (d, a, b♭, a). A second canon between B and T quotes chant motives accompanying “salve,” “vita,” “filii,” “eja” and “nobis.” The initial pitches of the B/T canon for the three invocations, verses 7, 8 and 9, are inversions of the chant. To complement repetition of chant for consecutive verses 1 and 2[2] and verses 7 and 8, Josquin restates the entire texture for the respective verses (mm. 1-14=14-28 and mm. 98-104=104-10). Final g; to duplicate the intervallic structure of the dux, a b♭ signature is necessary for T and S.

1. Chant melody closely follows the 16th-c. Franciscan antiphonaries except for insertion of pitch “c” between initial pitches (d, c, f) of verses 3 and 4 in Salve regina included in a printed antiphonary (1508-18) in Cambrai, Médiathèque Muncipale, XVI C 4, ff. 227v-8. (See App. 4).

2. Salve regina settings by Arcadelt, SR021, Josquin, SR127, Misonne, SR172, Palestrina, SR195, Praetorius, SR216, Reiner, SR225, Richafort, SR230, Sermisy, SR236 and anonymous settings SR339, SR349, SR358, SR376, SR382, SR393, SR395 and SR476 follow the same procedure.

Salve, regina, mater misericordiae;

O clemens,

O pia,

O dulcis virgo Maria.
