Tr-G1; M-C1; Ct-C3; T-C4; B-F4. Entire range, c-b♭’’. No evidence of chant. Horwood’s Salve regina consists of an initial section (verses 1-5, 61 mm.) constructed of overlapping textual phrases followed by the centerpiece (verse 6) devoted to “O Jesum” and set apart with chords (F, C, G) capped by coronas. Though more than double the length of the first section, the concluding section (143 mm.) includes three verses of Virgo mater trope[1] plus three invocations. Textual phrases are distinguished through reduced voices (2 or 3) as well as specific voice groups, full-voice texture, varied degrees of florid style and contrasting mensuration. To complement the macro structure, triple mensuration defines verses 1 though 6 whereas contrasting duple mensuration diffentiates troped section; triple mensuration returns for the final invocation, “O dulcis Maria.” Final G.
