On a macro scale Hampton’s Salve regina consists of an initial section of 49 measures (verses 1-6) and a concluding segment (125 mm.) that comprises four invocations plus three trope verses separated by the conclusion of verse 6, “benedictum…ostende” (mm. 50-62) and verse 1 of trope, Virgo mater.[1] Textual phrases are differentiated through full voice and reduced voices (2 or 3) including specific voice groupings, varied degrees of florid style, presence of imitation and contrast of mensuration. To the usual three trope verses inserted before the respective invocations of the Eton Salve reginas, Hampton adds the fifth trope verse, “Dele culpas,” and a preceding invocation,”O mitis.” The change of mensuration from triple to duple coincides with “O clemens,” the commencement of the concluding large section. Final g, b♭ signature.
