Polyphonic ensemble SSAATTBB

Two contrasting choirs. Chr. I: C-C1; A-C1; T-C3; B-C4. Range, c-e’’. Chr. II: C-C3; A-C4; T-C4; B-F4. Range, F-a’. Chant quotation is limited to “salve” motto (semibreves) in C and A of Chr. I. Textual phrases are primarily defined through alternation of subsequent phrases; on the other hand, two phrases are stated three times: “ad nos converte” (Chr. II, I, II) with same harmonic progression (C, G, C, G, C) and “virgo Maria (Chr. I, II, tutti). Tutti passages involve “in hac lacrimarum,” “Et Jesum benedictum fructum ventris tuo” and the final of three statements of “virgo Maria” that together constitute about a fifth of the entire antiphon. Except for a flourish of semiminums attached to the second syllable of “regina” (Chr. I, C and A), a homorhythmic texture complements a declamatory text setting. Final d.

Salve, regina, mater misericordiae;

O clemens,

O pia,

O dulcis virgo Maria.
