Salve regina

Polyphonic ensemble SATB

C-G2; A-C2; T-C3; B-F3. High clefs. Entire range, B♭-g’’. Other than the “salve” intonation (C) and chant-related “regina” (T and C, mm. 1-4), the Salve regina plainsong has limited influence on the antiphon. Textual phrases are differentiated through contrast of texture and mensuration as well as expressive harmonic progressions. An imitative texture introduces verses 1 (mm. 1-5) and 4 (mm. 12-5) and defines verse 9, “O dulcis…” (mm. 49-56). Verse 5, “Eia ergo…,” (mm. 22-33), the textual and musical centerpiece of the antiphon is distinguished through presence of triple mensuration and homophonic texture in chordal style. The acclamations “O clemens” and “O pia” are enhanced by a series of interlocking motives coupled with expressive harmonic progressions (mm. 44-8): D, E♭, D, c, G, c, G, a, G. Declamatory text setting in syllabic style prevails. Final g, b♭ signature.

Salve, regina, mater misericordiae;

O clemens,

O pia,

O dulcis virgo Maria.
