Three versions of verse 6, “Et Jesum…,” each with a specific voice grouping (3.p., Tp I, Tp II, A, T; 4.p., A, T, B; 5.p., Tp, A, T, B) offer options. A Spanish version[1] of the chant introduces initial textual phrases of the first five partes; more important is the presence of a cantus firmus cast as breves or semibreves in a significant portion of each pars. In 1.p. plainsong congruent with “spes nostra salve” first appears in T at pitch (mm. 14-20), then in Tp an octave higher (mm. 25-31), and finally in B pitched on G (mm. 31-37). Though chant has limited influence upon the other voices, a motive consisting of three minums followed by two semibreves (a, a, a, b♭, a) pervades the texture. A similar treatment of the cantus firmus occurs in 6.p. where chant associated with “virgo semper Maria” is stated on d’ in Tp II (mm. 225-31) and immediately followed by a statement a fifth higher (mm. 231-37); thereafter both statements are repeated (mm. 237-51) again with a texture replete with motivic material. Except for initial imitative entries for each pars a full-voiced texture prevails accompanied by a declamatory text setting. Final d, with b♭ included in text.

Franco most likely used the Psalterium, An[t]iphonarium Sanctorale (Mexico City: Pedro Ochate, 1584) or a closely related source; however, chant associated with “virgo semper Maria” reflects a Spanish chant version in Passionarium Toletanum (Alcalà de Henares: Arnoldo Guillén de Brocar, 1515). On the other hand, chant concurrent with textual phrases “gementes et flentes” and “O dulcis” may reflect a local practice. For transcription of Salve regina chant, see MRM 9, pp. 70-2.
