[1] Vita dulcedo

Polyphonic ensemble SSATB

[Tp I]-C1; [Tp II]-C1; [A]-C3; [T]-C4; [B]-F4. Alternatim setting. A variant[1] of the Spanish version of Salve regina permeates the texture of “vita, dulcedo” with the “salve” motto; chant primarily serves as a cantus firmus usually presented in breves and semibreves throughout the antiphon. Voice placement of cantus firmus varies: B (1.p.), T (2.p.), A (3.p.), T (4.p., “O dulcis,” mm. 98-103), A (4.p., “virgo semper Maria” at pitch, mm. 112-19), and Tp (4.p., “virgo semper Maria,” fifth higher, mm. 119-25). Within an imitative, contrapuntal texture, new material often constructed of motives pervades the non-cantus firmus voices. A declamatory text setting prevails. Final d.

1. Franco most likely used the Psalterium, An[t]iphonarium Sanctorale (Mexico City: Pedro Ochate, 1584) or a closely related source; however, chant associated with “virgo semper Maria” reflects a Spanish chant version in Passionarium Toletanum (Alcalà de Henares: Arnoldo Guillén de Brocar, 1515). On the other hand, chant concurrent with textual phrases “gementes et flentes” and “O dulcis” may reflect a local practice. For transcription of Salve regina chant, see MRM 9, pp. 70-2.

Salve, regina, mater misericordiae;

O clemens,

O pia,

O dulcis virgo Maria.
