Partitions

[1] Vita dulcedo

Polyphonic ensemble

S-C1; S II-C1; A-C4; T-C4; B-F4. Alternatim setting; verse 6, “Et Jesum…” is divided into two parts, the first set polyphonically and the second, beginning with “nobis…” in chant. A Spanish version of the chant,[1] usually in breves and semibreves, is relegated to S in 1.p., 2.p. and 4.p. and to S II in 5.p.; for pars 3 the cantus firmus begins in S but migrates to A in measure 105. Statements of “vita” (“salve”) motto in B and T anticipate the entrance of chant in S (m. 5). New motives or chant-derived motives provide material for an imitative, contrapuntal fabric; paired imitation (A/B and S/T) underscores “suspiramus.” Text setting combines syllabic and melismatic styles though treatment of text underlay is of limited concern. Final d, to complement chant, pars 4 has final a; minimal inclusion of b-flats in MS.

2. Breve Instrucción de canto llano ordenada por Luys de Villafranca, (Seville: Sebastián Trujillo, 1565). The chant associated with “in hac” closely follows plainsong version in Intonarium Toletanum, (Alcalá de Henares: Arnaldo Guillén de Brocar, 1516). For transcription of Salve regina chants see MRM 9, pp. 70-2.

Salve, regina, mater misericordiae;

O clemens,

O pia,

O dulcis virgo Maria.
