Initial pitches of chant (App. 4) introduce appropriate textual phrases where they permeate a dense imitative texture: 1.p., “vita,” mm. 1-7 and “et spes nostra,” mm. 14-7; 2.p. “ad te,” mm. 31-6 and “in hac lacrimarum,” mm. 55-63. “Et Jesum” motive appears in D I complemented by breves in all voices. A more prominent unifying device involves a cantus firmus derived from the first textual phrase of the Dutch liedeken, Myns liefkens bruyn ooghen;[1] nine statements include the following pitches in a variety of long note values concluding with a turning figure of semiminums that encircles pitches g and f: (a, b♭, a, g, b♭, a, (g, f), e, d.

Cantus firmus statements in pars 3 suggest canon at the upper fifth and distance of eleven breves. Cadential points are emphasized through pedal points that extend for 6 (1.p., D II and T, d), 7 (2.p., D I and T, d) and 9 measures (3.p., D I, d) surrounded by motives imitated in remaining voices. In these passages the B explores the low range, D-G (mm. 26-30 and 130-5). Final g (1.p., 2.p., 3.p.) a (4.p.), b♭ signature.
