Salve regina

Polyphonic ensemble SATB

C-G2; A-C2; T I-C3;T II-C3; B-F3. High clefs. Entire range, B♭-g’’. No evidence of chant. Textual phrases are characterized by contrasting motivic material, texture, voice groupings and harmonic language. “Salve…” is introduced through paired imitation (C/A and T II/B), a technique also applied to “gementes et flentes” (C/A and T I/B). On the other hand, “ad clamanus…Evae” and “illos…converte” exhibit homorhythmic texture. For “ad te suspiramus” an antiphonal approach contrasts upper (C, A, T I) and lower (T I, T II, B) voices. To express the text “Et Jesum, benedictum” Aichinger employs third-related harmonic progressions and cross relationships (E♭ c D B♭ a A d). Within a G major context, a harmonic language emphasizing minor chords (c and d) characterize the three final petitions, a segment that is entirely repeated (mm. 45-52 equals mm. 53-60). The word “mater” in verse one is omitted. A declamatory text setting prevails. Final g, b♭ signature.

Salve, regina, mater misericordiae;

O clemens,

O pia,

O dulcis virgo Maria.
