Salve regina

Polyphonic ensemble SATBX

C-G2; A-C2; T-C3; B-F3; Bc-F4. Entire range, B♭-g’’. Essentially a basso seguente, the Bc is a fifth lower than the B, indicative of chiavette, characterized by high clefs used in this setting.[1] No evidence of chant. Aichinger’s imitation (parody) motet borrows melodic, rhythmic, harmonic, mensural and structural features from Giovanni Gabrieli’s popular madrigal, Lieto godea.[2] To complement antiphonal treatment of the model scored for eight voices, comparable features are employed with alternation between C/A and T/B (mm. 1-7). Like the madrigal, this Salve regina repeats extensive structural segments. Musical material (mm. 34-50) associated with verses 6, 7, 8 and 9 is restated in entirety. A variation of the initial statement (mm. 1-6) occurs with text “ad te clamamus exules filii Evae” (mm. 7-13). The conclusion of verse 5, “misericordes…converte” (mm. 27-33) in triple mensuration contrasts with duple mensuration of surrounding material. Syllabic style dominates the declamatory text setting. Final a, principal cadences on a and d; Bc, Final d, b♭signature.

1. O. Vecchi’s Alma redemptoris mater notated with high clefs has a basso seguente transposed a fourth lower than the B (AR100).

2. CMM 12, Vol. 6, pp. 124-30.
Lieto godea sedendo / I sat happily enjoying
l’aura che tremolando dolce spira l’aprile; / the breeze that sweetly trembling April breathes;
Ogn’ hor sospira d’Amor ogn’ animale. / every hour every animal sighs with love.
Con mortal dardo / With his mortal dart
Amor volando venn’ e’l cor mi punse; / Love came flying and pierced my heart;
e las’ oimè, fugge meschino me: / and, alas, he escapes to my sorrow:
onde n’havrò la morte / and I shall die of it
s’in lieta non si cangia la mia sorte. / unless fate grants my happiness.

Salve, regina, mater misericordiae;

O clemens,

O pia,

O dulcis virgo Maria.
