Chant (App 4), relegated to S, Ct and B in partes 1 & 3, is embellished (e.g., “Salve” in S) or briefly introduced at beginning of textual phrases (e.g., “vita dulcedo” or “gementes”); in 2.p. it is cast as a cantus firmus in T in long-note values (“Eia ergo” and “illos tuos”) but also assumes the character of other voices. “Et Jesum” motive (B) within homophonic texture remarkably contrasts with surrounding material. For the T of the 1.p. and 3.p. Agricola quotes music and text of the corresponding voice part (a third lower to complement mode 1 of Salve regina) of William Frye’s Ave regina coelorum mater regis[1] along with its original triple mensuration in juxtaposition with duple mensuration of the other voices. Four lines of the foreign text are employed for the 1.p., the remaining two lines allocated to the 3.p. concluding with three statements of “O Maria” paired with the final four pitches of Frye’s tenor. The text underlay of the segmented T is treated freely and note values are presented at integer valor and in augmentation. The word “mater” in verse one of Salve regina is omitted. A melismatic text setting prevails. Final d, b♭ signature in B.

1. CMM 19, No. 5. The text comprises six rhymed lines with eight syllables per line; the chant melody is relegated to “In Honour of the Blessed Virgin Mary.” LU 1864. Rothenberg suggests that the quotation from Frye’s cantilena motet “serves the same symbolic purpose as the quotation of a chanson in a motet or transmitted in chansonniers.” For more concerning Agricola’s Salve regina see David J.
