Regina celi

Polyphonic ensemble SATB

[C]-C1; [A]-C3; [T]-C3; [B]-F4. Within an imitative, contrapuntal fabric that primarily consists of new material, chant (App. 3) displays a limited role aside from an intonation (“regina celi”) in T followed by brief statements (“letare,” “quia quem”) in T and “ora pro nobis deum” in S. An ostinato in B (mm. 44-9) supports a rising sequential passage in S and T for a majority of the phrase “resurrexit…alleluia.” With regard to the matter of text appropriated only to S and T, the motet reveals an unusual combination of antiphon and trope texts. In the midst of the textual phrase “ora pro nobis deum” in S, verse 1 of Alle domine nate matris[1] is presented in T followed by simultaneous statements of verse 1 (S) and verse 2 (T) without reference to the melody invariably coupled with the trope. Final C.

1. Alle Domine nate matris Deus alme nobis confer praestaque vivere:
O Lord, born of a kindly mother, grant and give us life.

Quam [quoniam] te decet laus honor O Domine qui de morte surgebas rex pie:
Since praise and honor become you, O blessed Lord, who rose a king from the dead:

Fac nos tecum surgere, alleluia.
Let us rise with you, alleluia.
Trope has “fac nos post te surgere” instead of “fac nos tecum surgere.”
