Polyphonic ensemble SATBB

[S]-C1; [A]-C3; [T]-F3; [B I]-F3; [B II]-F4. Entire range, F-d’’. A modified version of chant (App. 3) consigned to canon at the upper fourth and distance of two breves between B I and [T II] forms the structural core of the antiphon. The composer acknowledges the double melismas associated with “portare” and the final “alleluia” but omits the conclusion of the “portare” melisma” and repeats “meruisti” and “sicut dixit” to create a symmetrical structure; the first and third textual phrases of equal length (34 mm.) correspond to the second and fourth phrases consisting of 44 and 40 mm., respectively. The 1.p. consists of 78 mm., the 2.p., 74 mm. Additionally, anticipatory entries precede each textual phrases; e.g., paired imitation involving S/T, A/B II at the lower octave and S/T a fifth high reflect a spatial concern as voices are gradually added in anticipation of the canon and a full-voiced texture in m. 15. A declamatory text setting prevails. Final F, b♭ signature.

Description

Jeremy Noble suggests this motet could be attributed to Josquin primarily based upon style characteristics. (Noble, 1971, pp. 749-53); in a later article, Noble states “I am now inclined to think that it may be by a composer—but a good one—of the next generation, and that it was probably written for the Sistine Chapel,…” (Noble, 1994).
