Preceding the Introit of a Missa Paschalis, a plenary Mass, this antiphon setting incorporates chant[1] at the beginning of textual phrases (e.g., “regina coeli” and “quia…meruisti”) or to emphasis specific words (“letare,” “sicut dixit” and “alleluia”) usually in semibreves within an imitative texture. Identical material serves both verses of the trope[2] though C and T exchange voice parts for the second verse; a four-measure passage of parallel thirds between non-cantus firmus voices introduces each verse (mm. 80-85 and 95). Contrasting triple mensuration defines the conclusion of the trope, Fac…alleluia.” All voices are texted with little regard for text underlay. Final C.

1. Although the antiphon exhibits limited use of chant, the second and third “alleluias” resemble Regina caeli in Ant. Aug. An alternate version of Regina caeli in Antiffanarium [Augustense] per circulum anni edited by Sixtus Haug, Augsburg (E. Ratdolt), 1495, f. [a4]v (EDM 80, p. 70) omits the concluding melisma of “laetare” and the second “portare” melisma, and includes variant readings of the first, second and third “alleluias.”
