C I-C1; C II-C1; A-C3; T I-C4; T II-C4; B-F4. Entire range, E-e’’. Equal C voices within same range, d’-e’’. Textual phrases are differentiated through contrast of texture, mensuration, rhythmic gestures and antiphonal treatment. Initial pitches of chant (App. 3) associated with “regina” introduce C I, T I and B within an imitative texture (mm. 1-8); the remaining text of line 1 (“coeli latare,” mm. 11-4) is set in a dense texture of independent voices with rhythmic gestures of minums, semiminums and fusae. Lines 2 (“Quia…portare,” mm. 21-9) & 3 (“resurrexit…dixit,” mm. 39-47) are of equal length and similar in style with independent voices as well as a reduction in voices suggesting antiphonal treatment: line 2, “meruisti portare,” C I, C II, A, T I, mm. 26-7; and line 3, “sicut dixit,” C I, A, T I, B, mm. 43-4. On the other hand, line 4, “ora…Deum” in full voice texture, primarily consists of semiminums and minums with a melismatic text setting. Triple mensuration, homophonic/homorhythmic texture, antiphonal treatment and rhythmic gestures involving syncopation define the four “alleluia” sections (mm. 14-20, 30-8, 48-55, and 63-71). Final G.

D-Mbs Mus.ms. 8 (dated 1611) opens with an unattributed cycle of the four Marian antiphons (SR326, AR121, AC170, & RC270), all for 6 vv with similar style characteristics, most likely by Giacomo Perlazio (d 1612). The Veronese priest was Vizekapellmeister at the Bavarian court chapel (1609-12) but had been associated with the Munich chapel since 1592. He is reported to have assembled a bound book “mit Magnificat und andern Kirchengesang.” In addition to the four antiphons, D-Mbs Mus.ms. 8 also includes eight Magnificats and 4 additional pieces, all anonymous.
